When this leaking fluid accumulates in the skin, it forms the small swellings that we recognize as hives. Hives happen when the cells in the skin called mast cells release histamine, a chemical that causes tiny blood vessels (capillaries) to leak fluid. Sometimes they are red, but they don’t have to be. Hives, also called urticaria, are rounded or oval swellings (bumps) on the skin that often are itchy. As a result, the problem can develop in an almost endless variety of ways. A long list of natural and synthetic chemicals can trigger contact dermatitis, including those found in soaps, household cleaners, laundry detergents, metal jewelry, perfumes, industrial solvents, cosmetics, fabric finishes, shampoos, plants and even antibiotic ointments.
